| WATER highlights conceptual art work that is inspired by ideas concerning water. Not only Winslow Homer, Joseph Turner, Milton Avery Vija Celmins and Rebecca Horn are affected by the light, depths, intrusions, encyclopedic biosphere of life, transport, viscosity, color, intransigence, transparency, mystery and spirit of the seas, but modern artists. The mission of Livingroom Newport is to extend a dialogue across communities and social consciousness, where traditional seascape painters can enjoy and come to know contemporary practices, and more current art applications can remember the fine traditions out of which they have emerged. With this exhibition, Livingroom Newport continues its delivery of contemporary art from local, metropolitan and international artists in a local network. We imagine that Newport--in an increasingly global and virtual economy -- might serve as a hub between Southern New England, New York, American and international communities, where the concepts, images, and embodiments of ideas about water can be seen in every corner of the world, from the Andaman to the Yellow Sea.
Remembering Ishmael's musings in Moby-Dick, to see water anywhere in the world is to look over the pier side where you live and look at the ebbing, slightly oily surface of the water right at home, the bath water slosh you drain, as it follows a journey to the brackish water table, back into the atmosphere of cirrus clouds, to fall upon a jungle treetop canopy a thousands miles from home... Open Saturdays and Sundays for the months of October and November, Water offers entertaining, evocative glimpses into the heart of the immanent element of water. So drink up!
